چکیده

Sustainable yields that are at least 80% of the maximum sustainable yield are sometimes referred to as pretty good yield (PGY). The range of PGY harvesting strategies is generally broad and thus leaves room to account for additional objectives besides high yield. Here, we analyze stage-dependent harvesting strategies that realize PGY with conservation as a second objective. We show that (1) PGY harvesting strategies can give large conservation benefits and (2) equal harvesting rates of juveniles and adults is often a good strategy. These conclusions are based on trade-off curves between yield and four measures of conservation that form in two established population models, one age-structured and one stage-structured model, when considering different harvesting rates of juveniles and adults. These conclusions hold for a broad range of parameter settings, though our investigation of robustness also reveals that (3) predictions of the age-structured model are more sensitive to variations in parameter values than those of the stage-structured model. Finally, we find that (4) measures of stability that are often quite difficult to assess in the field (e.g. basic reproduction ratio and resilience) are systematically negatively correlated with impacts on biomass and impact on size structure, so that these later quantities can provide integrative signals to detect possible collapses.

Studying Varieties and Relationships of Yield and Quality Traits in Tall Wheatgrass (Agropyron elongatum) under Two Cutting Management Procedures

The objectives of this research were to study the varieties and relationships of yield and quality traits under two harvesting management procedures concerning forage dry matter (DM yield) and 5 quality traits such as Dry Matter Digestibility (DMD%), Water Soluble Carbohydrates (WSC%), Crude Protein (CP%), Acid Detergent Fibre (ADF%) and total ash in tall wheatgrass (Agropyron elongatum). In th...

Demographic evidence of illegal harvesting of an endangered asian turtle.

Harvesting pressure on Asian freshwater turtles is severe, and dramatic population declines of these turtles are being driven by unsustainable collection for food markets, pet trade, and traditional Chinese medicine. Populations of big-headed turtle (Platysternon megacephalum) have declined substantially across its distribution, particularly in China, because of overcollection. To understand th...

Investigation of the role of filters in soil moisture conservation using rainwater harvesting techniques on steep lands

Knowledge about optimizing use of rain water under different systems is crucial for overcoming water stress and maximizing crop yield. In this regard, rain-water harvesting is one option that increases the amount of water per unit cropping area, reduces drought, and enables use of run-off. In this study, the importance of filters in rainwater catchment systems for increasing crop yields on stee...

Dynamics and management of stage-structured fish stocks.

With increasing fishing pressures having brought several stocks to the brink of collapse, there is a need for developing efficient harvesting methods that account for factors beyond merely yield or profit. We consider the dynamics and management of a stage-structured fish stock. Our work is based on a consumer-resource model which De Roos et al. (in Theor. Popul. Biol. 73, 47-62, 2008) have der...

اثر تراکم بوته و مرحله فنولوژیک برداشت بر عملکرد روغن و پروتئین کوشیا (Kochia scoparia L. Schrad) در شرایط آبیاری با آب شور

Production of halophytes using saline waters and soils, and feeding livestock with them, is one of the most sustainable ways of desert ecosystems conservation and food production for people living in these areas. A field experiment was conducted at Salinity Research Station, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, in 2007 to evaluate the effect of planting density and harvesting time on oil and protein...
